My approach to medicine is to be a good listener. One of the common threads that I have seen throughout my life and career is that everyone wants to heard. When people feel like they are heard they feel valued. Everyone wants to feel valued. In order for my relationship with my patients to work, I have to hear what they are saying and listen to what they say and do not say. I try to listen with an open heart. When I am able to make that connection to a patient it makes my job easier because then I can better get to the root of their problems. Medicine is not only book smarts but also empathy and common sense. Being a physician can be challenging at times but when you can look at patient or their family and see the impact you have had on their lives it is pretty amazing. After 30 years of practicing the art of medicine I still love it when I know I have helped some face whatever health issue they are struggling with.
